Brooks A. Lane, assistant professor in the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded the Charles F. Knapp Faculty Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering.

Lane’s research focuses on soft tissue mechanics and mechanobiology in cardiovascular disease on-set, progression, and therapeutic or surgical interventions. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina in 2019, focusing on diverse murine aortopathies and experimental methods for biomechanical characterization.

As a postdoctoral fellow, Lane investigated failure mechanisms in aortic dissection at École des Mines de Saint-Étienne in France, prior to joining Emory University and receiving an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship to examine mechanobiological mechanisms in valvular disease repair strategies. Lane then moved to Drexel University as a Hartwell Fellow to study the role of inflammation in vascular diseases and immunomodulatory therapies.

His current research focus is aimed at examining the complex roles of arterial damage, vascular remodeling, and inflammation-mediated processes in vascular diseases and following surgical interventions to improve clinical outcomes.

The Charles F. Knapp Faculty Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering is one of two faculty fellowships created by Dr. Joseph Halcomb to attract junior faculty who demonstrate promise in strategic areas. The two-year fellowship, which has possibility for renewal, provides awardees $10,000 for research and related expenses.
